TOPIC IDEAS
(Try to move discussions of these or the other Topic Ideas to the discussion forums so we can have a thread to follow)
"Resources - how to make them known to others - wikis and Moodle?"--This topic idea was posted on a Google Doc where Librarian-Coaches discuss their ideas for professional development. It fits well the discussion we had this afternoon. Coaches and Librarians could design an action plan for them to work together to develop a resource page of quality sources for teachers. (Terry)
If we're exploring the theme of Libraries as 21st Century Learning Centers (and we might want to look at the separate benefits for students, teachers, AND the community), we could discuss the coach/librarian partnership in leading professional learning communities (study groups) in both physical and virtual spaces. This could be a follow up or natural result of Terry's idea and seems to make sense with the closely knit roles of coaches and librarians. For example, what are some strategies librarians and coaches can use to identify the professional development needs of their staff to better serve them? What criteria should be used to select professional reading material? How can coaches and librarians promote professional growth and collaboration to best serve and support staff? How can Web 2.0 tools be used to promote collaboration among teachers (as in Terry's idea above)? Perhaps we can use Terry's activity and these questions as a guide and model for PD, while reaping the benefit of a created resource all at the same time.
Great ideas...I love the idea of having them work to create an actual resource page where coach and librarian can pool their expertise. I also think we need to get the participants deeply engaged in the question: What is the role of the library in the digital age and how might it evolve in the next decade? I certainly don't have a definitive answer for that, but our experts might be able to generate some insightful opening discussion from this question.
Another idea for organizing our presentation---What if we looked at 21st century research as a process, and broke it down accordingly?
--finding information--search engines, databases, etc...including multimedia resources
--evaluating information--web based tools and tricks for helping students and teachers do this more effectively
--organizing and sharing information--social bookmarking (Diigo, Delicious, etc.), wiki resources (as mentioned above), Zotero and other(?) similar tools that are changing the process of online research
--documenting multimedia and copyright issues- maybe too big and a topic all its own?
--presenting and publishing research beyond the written paper...web 2.0, presentation tools (like Google Docs, Prezi, Slide Share), wikis and other web site design tools, video, etc?
This could fit nicely under the umbrella of the library as a 21st Century Learning Center and provide a way to organize a functional collaborative librarian/coach resource that could be utilized by both teachers and students in any subject area. It has been a personal goal of mine this year to put together a 21st century research resource for both teachers and students...this would be a nice way to put that into motion!
I also like the idea of PD resources, but I'm not sure how involved in PD our librarians are in my district. I can see the relevance with coaching though, and perhaps we would benefit to look at how other districts are collaborating in this way.

Below is a draft of the registration application we need to fill out for PaTTAN to get a link to send out. We need to flesh out our goals and agenda. My name is there as a placeholder, they require something there, it will not be posted on the registration site. PSLA preconf- pattan.doc
